you cannot catch a piplup,you can get one at the start of the game in the 3 choice with is turtwig,chimchar and piplup. Another way is to get one from the gts (global trade system) REQ:wifi acess
Is turtwig a good starter for Pokemon pearl?
Turtwig is the second best starter, the best is chimchar. I think that turtwig is a good starter because sometimes it can be hard to find any good grass Pokemon, piplup is ok but personally i wouldn't get it because once you have started the game there is an amazing choice of good water Pokemon (there is a LOT of water Pokemon) , my favourite is milotic which i love to bits. chimchar is very good because there aren't many fire Pokemon at all. i have started with each of these Pokemon and my favourite is chimchar but at the moment i have torterra which is the 3rd stage of turtwigs........thing and he is doing well and i would recommend him!! but if you would want a good starter that isn't one that everybody gets then i would get turtwig because everybody gets chimchar by bethwhoknowsall (sorry this was a bit long!!)

Once you enter Lake Verity for the first time, a cutscene begins and the next time you have control, you have to choose Chimchar, Turtwig, or Piplup. Choose Piplup and then you have it!
