The block and bell housing match and bolt up, but check to see if any electrical connections have changed and if it's compatible with the 2002 computer. All the stuff from your burned up 2002 engine should change to your 1996 engine ok so maybe it won't be an issue.

i had an '03 for a while and i believe it was on the frame near the steering stem on a metal plate snapped to the frame. now i am not totally sure but i think it is also on the bottom of the engine.
