No, you canot get 3 totems without getting essences because the only way to get totems (of miltonius) is essences.
To get essences kil the makais but only if you have x50 bone dust.

no, you can still get it from the people with the sword of miltonius. click on their sword and accept the quest twisted items of miltonius. for that quest you will need 3 totems. to get 1 totem you need 100 esscense of miltonius from the dark makai. then go to miltonius acccept the quest totems of miltonius. do that 3 times and you will get 3 totems. note: the esscence are really hard to get and the crimson plate of miltonius is also for non-members.
