  • you can not "get" Down syndrome, you are either born with it or you are not born with it. there has only been one documented case of a male with down syndrome fertilizing an egg and it resulted in a miscarriage. down syndrome is not something you can catch. it is a chromosomal defect, a fluke of nature. it is also known as Trisomy 21. typically advanced people are born with 46 pairs of chromosomes. each pair has only two chromosomes. people with down syndrome have an extra chromosome pair of the 21st set of chromosomes. so people with down syndrome have 47 pairs of chromosomes. Three to four percent of all cases of trisomy 21 are due to Robertsonian Translocation. In this case, two breaks occur in separate chromosomes, usually the 14th and 21st chromosomes. There is rearrangement of the genetic material so that some of the 14th chromosome is replaced by extra 21st chromosome. So while the number of chromosomes remain normal, there is a triplication of the 21st chromosome material. Some of these children may only have triplication of part of the 21st chromosome instead of the whole chromosome, which is called a partial trisomy 21. hope this helps your question. =]
