The old resistor was burned out. If you burn out the new one again, replace the blower motor.

A blower resistor can be replaced, in your 2002 Oldsmobile, by removing the resistor wiring. Remove the retaining screws. Reverse the process to install the new resistor.
The blower motor speed resistor is burned out. You can replace only the resistor but the resistor probably burned out because the blower motor is going bad. If you want to fix it for good, replace both the blower motor and blower motor speed resistor.
The resistor is on the passenger inside of the car under the dach right in front of the fire wall. The fan blower is right in front of resistor so all you can see if the tip of the resistor. I found it best to work while on my back but this requires you to be agile and not too big or you will find it very difficult. There are four 7/32 screws (3 on fan blower and one on the resistor). You must take the blower out to access/replace the resistor. Overall it took me about 15 minutes tops to replace and the part ran about $30. I also found a website with some pictures that helped to prepare me before I started so that I was familiar with what I was looking at.
