Some people are sensitive to certain foods, whether eaten cooked or raw. Sometimes taking Digestive/Digestion Enzymes can assist with the digestion of foods, but you won't know how beneficial the enzymes will be until you try them. I ONLY trust whole food based supplements, including enzymes. Forget the synthetic stuff. While some people are greatly helped by these enzymes, they were not much help for me.

The best thing to do is to either consume that food (if healthy) in small quantities, or not eat it at all. Sometimes, when I really want a certain food that may not set well with my stomach, I will eat a safe food first, then a little bit of the food that doesn't set well with my stomach, and then finish with a safe food. This "sandwich" approach allows me to eat certain foods I love, but cause me stomach issues (indigestion, heartburn, reflux). I don't do this often, but every now and then I get TIRED of being limited to such a small number of foods that don't hurt my stomach and want to eat something I truly enjoy.

It can be extremely frustrating to be limited to so few foods that don't hurt your stomach, or create other digestive issues, but it is best to stick with the most healthy foods available that you can eat easily.

I have learned, some hard lessons along this journey of digestion woes. While I had absolutely NONE of the risk factors, I developed C-DIFF, and ended up in the hospital for four days. Afterward I conducted research online and found a study by NIH that indicated the use of PPIs could create a risk for C-DIFF. Makes sense, we need our stomach acid to kill the bad bacteria in the food we eat. When the stomach acid is so drastically reduced by the PPI pills, the bad bacteria are allowed to continue through the stomach and into the intestines where they can begin to multiply. After awhile, the bad bacteria can grow to the point they outnumber the good bacteria and C-DIFF can develop. If you know anything about C-DIFF, it is an awful experience, and can be fatal if not brought under control/eliminated.

So, based on my personal experience, and the study of NIH (and now there are new studies being released that basically say the same), I believe that we need to take control, as much as possible, of the digestive problems through what we eat and drink, and any other lifestyle habits that would impact our health (e.g., smoking, excessive stress).

I have found that my stomach has been doing better since switching to cooking withOUT any seasonings or spices. I have also found that I am beginning to love the taste of vegetables plain, steamed for 5 to 8 minutes. It has been an expensive journey, to try so many different foods and cooking methods (and tools), but the time and expense has been worth it to discover what works well for me and helps my stomach and digestive system to settle down and begin to heal. I don't remember the author, but as someone said, "Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food." I use medications minimally to help me get over any hurdles, then try to heal and maintain health through natural means of healthy eating and lifestyle.
