A child who never had chicken pox can be infected with chicken pox from an adult (usually over the age of 50 years) who develops shingles. Contact with the fluid from mucous membranes (coughing, sneezing) or from contact with the fluid that oozes out of the open sores carries the virus.

A child who has had chicken pox before cannot get chicken pox from an adult with shingles, nor can the child get shingles (because shingles appears later in life).

An adult who has shingles cannot give shingles to another adult--- the 2nd adult would get chicken pox first IF that adult never had chicken pox as a child.

No, herpes is only spread with direct contact with the herpes virus from another person. Herpes is caused by a different microbe than chickenpox, although they are both in the herpesvirus family.

Yes. A person with shingles with open moist lesions is infectious to those without prior chickenpox vaccine or infection. A person with shingles can only spread the virus through direct contact with the lesions; being in the same room with the person with shingles, sharing food, or other contact won't transfer the virus unless there is direct skin-to-skin contact with the lesions. Unlike chickenpox, shingles is not transmitted by coughing or sneezing. As long as the shingles lesions can be covered, someone with shingles can continue all work and family activities without worrying about giving the infection to someone else.

If the shingles lesions are crusted up and dried out, then the infection is past the stage when it is contagious.

Shingles can only cause chickenpox if two things are true:

  • You have direct contact with wet shingles lesions;
  • You have not been vaccinated against or had chickenpox.

Yes. Chickenpox can be contracted from shingles if the individual has never had chickenpox.Drainage from the blisters can carry the varicella-zoster virus. Shingles may be contagious until lesions have crusted over.

You can only get chickenpox from shingles if you are not immune to chickenpox and if you have direct contact with wet shingles blisters or ulcers. Otherwise, there is no risk.

Can you get shingles from lying in a bed after someone else who had shingles say in a hospital?

Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus. You do not get shingles from someone with shingles; you get chickenpox from someone with shingles. Then when you get older, you will get shingles because you had chickenpox. Or, you might get older and never get chickenpox. In that case, you will thank your mother for having you vaccinated against chickenpox when you were a child.

Can you get chickenpox from someone who has shingles?

Yes, it is possible for someone to get chickenpox from a person who has shingles, but it's not easy. You can only get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you come in direct skin-to-skin contact with wet or weeping lesions. Once the lesions are crusted over, you can't get it. Since you haven't had chickenpox, which is the same virus as shingles (that you've now been exposed to), you'll probably end up with chickenpox.
