It is also considered in the work world to be generally bad to wear "tacky" or "showy" earrings that would call attention to them. While working as a doctor, your best bet is a small stud or small ring / hoops. Nothing too much. Also, the smaller they are (like studs) the less likely they are to get caught in something while moving about or working.
