Yes. Absolutely. Assuming you are in the United States (I don't know about the law in other countries), you can name your child anything you want. The days of coverture (in which a woman looses her autonomy and self determination upon marriage) are long over. Additionally, if you really think about it deeply, there is no good reason to name children after their fathers at birth, even if you were married. So many marriages end in divorce and so many men choose to be dead beat dads, why would any sane woman give a man the name recognition for a child she has just created and labored to bring into the world? If a man wants to be a real dad, then maybe he can earn that privilege and honor through years of being a good father, but it should, as a matter of principle and reality, always be up to the mother to bestow or not bestow that honor onto a man. Women simply do more work to create and nurture life than do men. That is simply reality.
Little known fact: Women contribute more DNA to their children. ALL of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are from our mothers. ALL of them. Mitochondria are the organelles in cells that allow us to utilize oxygen to create energy out of food sources during cellular respiration (the Kreb Cycle). Most of the DNA in our bodies is mtDNA, not the nucleic DNA, which we all know comes equally from the mother and father. When The Bible talks about God "breathing the breath of life" into Adams nostrils, we can only assume that it is code for "God is a woman," because only our mothers can give us the breath of life. Simple fact.
Name your baby after you and name your self after your mother. Go back as far as you can to your most distant matriarchal grandmother. It is her DNA that gives you the breath of life and her DNA which you will pass on through your daughters. If a man wants to earn the high honor of taking credit for your life's work, he better do something extraordinary.
Congratulations!
yes u can if u were married before the father died. if not then it's very hard to convice the court to take the name but not impossable
If you are unmarried the choice is entirely up to you. But I would find it a bit confusing if the child has a different last name from both parents.
