Titanium alloys such as titanium-carbide, titanium-nitride or titanium-carbo-nitride (black coating) can be used. An example would be the gold drill bits. They are usually titanium alloy or more commonly a tungsten alloy. These alloys can reach a hardness of Rockwell C 85, but when used as a coating, it merely allows the blade to hold an edge and does not strengthen the overall structure. Although a full titanium alloy blade would be possible, it must consist of a softer inner core. This would not strenghthen the blade but would reduce weight.
