There are always two hosts in every online game lobby of Halo 3.

The first host is the party leader. The party leader is the person who decides the lobby that players are located in, the gametype they will be playing, the map they will be playing on, the playlist they will be playing in, or the film that they will be watching. The party leader also controls the game options, decides when to start games, can end games while they are in session, and even limit the party size or close it off to other players completely. Additionally, the party leader can boot players from the party. The status of party leader can be freely passed amongst any player in the party at any time, by the party leader of course.

The second host is the connection host. Players are unable to choose who the connection host is, and most players will never know who the connection host is at any given time. The status of connection host is always passed to the player with the best connection at the time by the game itself.
