Sure, you can have a relationship with someone who is separated from their spouse. You can't marry that person unless he or she gets a divorce, but you can have a relationship. I think if you are separated you should wait til the divorce is final then start a new relationship in the right way! It also depends on who asked for the divorce in the first place!
There is no law that prevents you from having a relationship when you are separated.
To have a thing for someone means to have a crush on someone. To have a thing with someone means to be in an undefined relationship, where both parties are just having sex. It can also be a casual relationship, where you can date others. Usually it's not serious. It can also be called a fling. If someone has a thing with a friend, that would be called a f.ck friend.

Yes it is cheating, don't try to justify things. If you are engaged, it basically means you are committed to that person , if you are having an emotional and physical relationship with someone else, then you are cheating on the relationship and on your commitment. Break off the engagement.

Individuals, who run from one relationship to another, usually never find what they are looking for in that other person. Having an affair with someone is significantly different from actually living with that person. The sexual excitement of the relationship usually becomes dull and boring after a couple of years.
While having a crush is being overwhelmed with emotion for someone, when you two enter a relationship together than it has evolved into a mutual interest. The crush stage is usually referring to before entering the relationship.
Indicators of a relationship addiction would be, if someone thought they were in love with that special someone, but it was all in their head. Therefor, because of that fact, they become crazy. I admit that I used to do things like then when I was little. (Try not to have puppy love like I did) To prevent this from having, I would try to start having a boyfriend when your about 11.

a relationship of convenience is dating someone simply because he or she is around all the time (i.e. conveniently located in your life) rather than having a real romantic connection with them.....
