Horace Slughorn comes to Hogwarts to be the Potions teacher, and Snape becomes the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Dumbledore shows Harry several memories of Voldemort's past. Harry receives a potions book with many helpful hints that allows him to excel at potions, and use many spells. The book once belongd to someone nicknamed "The Half-Blood Prince" Harry learns from his sessions with Dumbledore that Voldemort has created 7 horcruxes, an evil object that conceals part of his soul so that he may be immortal. Harry and Ginny start dating. Harry suspects Draco Malfoy is plotting something, and is proven correct at the end when Malfoy opens a passage to allow death eaters into the castle. Harry goes with Dumbledore to a cave where Dumbledore believes a Horcrux is hidden. Dumbledore drinks a potion that causes him great pain, and they are attacked by inferi, but escape. Snape kills Dumbledore. Harry breaks up with Ginny; Harry, Ron, and Hermione all agree to drop out of Hogwarts to search for Horcruxes and destroy them.
