If the appendix looks normal on a CT scan, and the patient has signs or symptoms consistent with appendicitis, there is very good evidence that IV antibiotics is the treatment of choice, and will avoid appendectomy approximately 2/3 of the time, with only a 1 or 2 day hospitalization. This is the treatment of choice for uncomplicated appendicitis in many countries, I am not sure why it has been so slow to cross the pond.
