I live in the dark skies area in the Scottish Borders so have seen some unbelievable shooting stars/meteors but never heard one till about two minutes ago, I couldn't believe it so came in and googled if it was possible, this thing was massive and left a trail, not the usual trail directly behind it but one that stayed in the sky after it burnt out, it made a sound like gas escaping, like opening a bottle of irn bru slowly, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
Usually not very far. Most meteorites are fairly small when they reach the air and will usually make no more than a loud "thud" when they hit the ground. A larger meteorite would be much louder and could be heard many miles away. It would not be the sound of the impact itself you hear, but rather the sonic boom as it passes through the air.
Yes it is you may not see one if you live in a city though.
Shooting stars are actually meteors -- trails of light caused by meteoroids falling to Earth and burning in the atmosphere.
depends if its small you cant hear it if its big its like a rocket sound
I have seen many, many falling stars in my life. Asteroid or meteor showers are truly exciting.

You know, I bet meteorites DO make sounds (inaudible to the unaided ear), and I wonder if we could learn something interesting about them or about the atmosphere by attempting to listen in. I like this question.
