Probably. I believe that hollowing out the cat will affect the O2 sensor. I imagine it would see a change in the exhaust environment and signal the engine to change the fuel mixture. Besides, dead cats should be recycled. They have platinum inside and have some worth.
Just bite the bullet and buy the new cat.
