The job of the music producer is one of the least well-defined jobs in the music industry. It was during this time that the role of the producer became much more financially oriented, and the main role of the music producer was to make sure that all of the funds were in place to create and finish the record. Many other musical disciplines followed after hip-hop, with a new crop of producers coming up who were basically financiers and salesman rather than musicians. There is really no school to attend to become a music producer you simply have to become a part of making a record successful after it is finished. If you have enough of a track record, you can be paid to make records ahead of time by one of the major record companies. Otherwise, you will usually have to find your own funding and pay for your own studio time and musicians before you present your final product to a record label, who will then distribute it to the public.
