No. Miniature horses are horses, and not dogs or cats. They require training like a regular horse, and need a job to do. They need to graze and socialise with other horses. The only difference between a miniature horse and a regular horse is that you can't ride them and they require less food. They are just as expensive to keep as a regular horse in every other respect.

yes if you have at least 1 acre of free space for them to run

Actually, you can keep any kind of horse in your backyard provided you have enough land. on average, for a full-sized horse you want 2 acres, but they can live on less if you give them hay. My grandparents kept 3 horses on 1 1/2 acres with hay put out 24/7. However, they are much happier with more land, as the 3 horses are now on 8 acres.

This is an interesting question. Although many people will say that it is gross and their place is out it a barn, its not true. Many people like to let their full sized horses indoors. And I have seen people that actually keep minis as indoor pets. So yes you can keep a mini in a house.

Unadvisable.

But if you could board at a stable, or could lease a small plot of land outside the city then I would say yes. I own two miniature horses and they live quite comfortably on about one acre of land (however we are constantly having to feed alternative options like hay and grazing them by hand on the roadside because they chew the grass right down in the winter).

depends on where you live, you state laws, your city laws, and you will also have to take in mind the amount of land it will need and how you will provide everything for it i.e grooming supplies, hay, supplements, grain, vet care, farrier car... ect

You can have a miniature horse in your back yard if your local zoning laws permit it. If the zoning laws permit it, then they will most likely have a requirement for a large enough area for the horse. There will also be the requirement that it be a certain distance away from the house next door.

You can check it out at your city's planning department.

You should check your local zoning laws about this. You can check through your local agricultural extension agency. But typically horses no matter the size are considered livestock and are subject to the same laws. If you can keep one, remember that they need almost as much space as a full sized horse. Most of the time you can. i did. Enjoy your horse!!

Miniature horses are still considered livestock and are zoned as such, if you are not zoned for agricultural or livestock keeping then no you cannot keep one in your backyard. If you do try to keep a Miniature horse in your backyard illegally you can be fined and the animal can be seized by animal control or the police. If you are zoned or can get a permit to keep one you will still need enough space for the mini to gallop around when it feels like it.
