In the US, the Church of Scientology hasn't gained "religious" status. The US Government takes great pains to NOT specify what is a religion and what is not. The Church of Scientology, however, did manage to get the IRS to qualify them as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization in 1993; amid significant controversy. The Church of Scientology launched over 2,000 lawsuits against the IRS. The details of their tax-exemption remain secret to this day -- the IRS refuses to release them. One of the most controversial points about their tax-exemption is that Scientologists are permitted to take tax deductions for monies spent on Scientology courses -- an exemption that is granted to no other religion in the US. You can learn more about this by Googling: "sklar scientology". The Ninth District Court has commented that this Scientology-specific tax deduction is a violation of the Establishment Clause of the constitution.
