With above ground sand pool filters when you need to vacuum should the pump be on filter position or vacuum to waste?
It should be on filter and don't forget to backwash at least once a week.

Caring for green saltwater pool.Very simple. I have just done this a week ago. 1. Shock the pool and leave for a couple of days. Yes, you CAN do this. (By the time you are ready to use these pool chemicals will have dissapeared)2. When green starts to clear up, allow the water to go through filtering system with chlorinator switched off. (As you have shocked the pool there is no need for this to be on). I ran this for about 12 hours. You need to keep an eye on the filter. I had to clean (backwash) my sand filter often in these 12 hours. 3. When you are happy with the clarity of the water, run system as you normally would. My pool is pristine.

I run the filter every night for 6 to 8 hrs no matter what and make sure my skimmer has chlorine in it.......never have had bad pool water and there are days even a week of no use. If you don't filter it daily you will get sediment on the bottom and algae.

First, "shock" your pool. Yes, even with a salt system, since all a salt system does is make chlorine. Run your pump 24/7. You must monitor the filter pressure and clean your filter as needed. This may be DAILY for the first 5 days. As the algae dies it clogs your filter badly and must be removed. Your pool should turn "white" within 48 hours after shocking or not enough shock. All algae should be dead(white) then your filter will do the rest with your help. You will have to vacuum multiple times after the algae dies and this will often clog the filter thereby needing cleaning. BALANCE ALL CHEMICALS. With diligence your pool can be crystal clear WITHIN a week.

There is a gauge on the filter that will indicate this. when as the pressure gets higher it indicates that there is a build up of dirt and the filter needs cleaning or backwashing. another indicator is if you note a marked reduction in suction at the static skimmer of the pool.

Try to get it all into a filter while at the same time keeping the pool moving (the water moving) and putting chemicals in twice a week. one of 3 things......worn laterals in the bottom of the sand filter, the sand might need changing which should be changed every 5 yrs ish or are you doing regular back washes..at least once a week.
