My personal experience with Shiba Inu's is that they are best not left alone for extended periods of time. I cannot begin to describe the damage caused by this dog as a young adult. He got lonely and compulsively chewed on everything and would pee inside the house even if we'd let him out and were only gone long enough to get dinner. We tried to crate train him as a puppy but he screamed incessantly the second we put him in it and was actually hurting himself on the bars.
Now that he's an adult we have a specific area of the house that he is confined to when we aren't home. This area has blankets, toys and most importantly CHEWIES! He does alright left alone for several hours but I am a stay at home mom so he's not left alone frequently for me to go to work. I wouldn't recommend this breed if you work long hours as they get very bored and will find naughty ways to occupy their time.
Keep in mind this is just MY personal experience and other people may have no trouble with their Shiba's being at home by themselves.
