you can move out at 16.

My daughter in NC, moved out at 16 yrs of age. I was legally obligated for any debts or problems she incurred, but I couldn't legally make her come home.

If a parent does not wish a minor to leave the parental home and the minor is not granted emancipation rights to do so, the parent or legal guardian can file a requisition motion to have the minor returned to their custody. If such an order is not granted, the parent can then request the court to relieve them of their parental obligations, which means they no longer are responsible financially or legally for their minor child. The exception is if the minor is appointed a legal guardian or placed in a foster or group home due to a court order, parent(s) can be held responsible for the cost of the care of said minor to the extent they are able to afford it.

A seventeen year old may quit school without parental or anyone else's permission in NC. I was horrified to learn this first hand when my 16 year old chose to quit school and I could do nothing to stop him.

This is not legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. Consult the specific laws for the state and county in which you reside for the rules that apply. In most states, any 18 year old is considered an adult and is capable of deciding when and where they reside. They have the ability to contract for housing. SOME states allow minors to become emancipated under specific circumstances, but this is not just a matter of filling out some paperwork. A minor is the responsibility of their parents until such time as they reach the age of majority or are legally emancipated. The parents are required to provide for the support of their minor children. If the parents give permission, the minor can live in another location. Such permission does not relieve the parents of the responsibility to provide support. If the parents do not give permission, the minor can be considered a runaway. Charges may apply to individuals that aid and abet such runaways, particularly if they are under the age of consent. In some states it is my understanding that this is not enforced for 17 year olds that leave home. If you are subject to abuse, you should contact social services for your area. They will assist you in getting out of the bad environment and into a safe place.

The age of consent is not 16 in NC. If you move out, you are a runaway. Wait until you are 18.

Nope still a minor until the age of 18, unless you get emancipated, which means you and your family are no longer lawfully related.

No, they have not reached the age of majority yet. Until then the parents have to be responsible and make the decisions.
