Here is how the election process works. a democrat in New Jersey, for example, votes for his or her party's choice. He or she makes an X by the candidates name. All other voters make their choices in the same way. At the close of the election, the ballots are collected. The ballots are sent to the state election board. The board counts the ballots. If the Democratic candidate wins, the electors also win.in that case, only the Democratic electors can vote for the president. They assemble at the capital city and vote. They vote on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December. The electoral votes are signed by each elector. Then they are sent to the President of the Senate in Washington. Each state follows a very similar process. The two houses of Congress meet on the sixth of January. In their presence, the President of the Senate counts the returns. The candidate who gets a majority of the votes wins. He/She is declared the President of the United States. The Vice-President is elected in the same way.

There are more like 8 steps in the election process. They are:

  1. Candidates announce plans to run for office
  2. Candidates campaign against candidates in their own party to win the primary election
  3. Primary elections are held; Republicans vote for the Republican candidate and Democrats vote for the Democrat
  4. Each party has their own week long convention to announce their candidates for President and Vice President
  5. Candidates campaign against candidates of all political parties to win votes in the general election
  6. The people vote for President-actually voting for the group of electors in the General Election
  7. The Electoral College casts its vote
  8. On January 20 the President is sworn into office

Here are the four steps to becoming president.....

Step One: Registered voters cast their votes in the general election.

Step Two: In each state, votes are counted. Canidate with the most votes wins all the states electoral votes (using the winner takes all system). There are 538 total electoral votes.

Step Three: Canidate must win a majority of electoral votes to win. Canidate must win 270 to win.

IF...there's a tie, election is decided by one of the U.S. House of Representatives. Each state has one vote.

* It's possible for a candidate to win popular vote and still loose.

Step Four: Canidate who wins the electoral votes nationally becomes President.
