Not quite sure what you mean... If an image contains text, you can use an OCR program to convert it into text you can manipulate.

The preview problem is due to the browser/file explorer not having the code to make thumbnails from the .png. The "any other program" problem sounds weird- if you cannot open the .png in MS Paint, IrfanView, GIMP or anything else then the .pngs are corrupt.
