Shortcuts on Macs are AliasesThis answer is for OS X.Open your Applications folder and find iTunes. Right click (or Control click) on the iTunes icon and select "Make Alias." Move the newly created alias (shortcut) to the desktop.Alternatively you can just drag iTunes into the Dock. Icons in the Dock are aliases (shortcuts) and are created immediately when an object is dragged there.
Let's say that the program you want is in the Macintosh HD, which is open. Drag the icon from the Macintosh HD onto the dock, and it will make a place for it. If it does not make a place, it is not an actual program. Just go into the Mac HD and grab the icon and drag it into the dock. You can double click on the program's icon to run it. While the program is running the icon will appear in the dock. Click the mouse on the icon in the Dock and hold it for a moment - a menu will pop up and you can select Keep In Dock from the menu to ensure the icon remains available in the dock.

For PC: Go to Start>All programs. Right click on the Google Chrome application, and click create shortcut. For MAC: You can add it to your dock by going into your applications folder, and dragging it to the dock. To create a desktop shortcut instead, Go to the applications folder, right click on the Google Chrome application, and click "make alias". Then drag the alias to the desktop. WARNING: Do not drag the application right to the desktop. This will create a duplicate rather than a shortcut (alias)
