Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer was first an illustrated story book written in 1939 by Robert L. May and distributed by the Montgomery Ward department stores. The song with the same title was written in 1949 by Johnny Marks, who was May's brother-in-law. It was recorded by Gene Autry and became a Billboard #1 hit at Christmastime that year.
