Each Greek god has it's own animal that represents it. For example, Athena has the owl, Zeus has the eagle, and Poseidon has the horse.
Athena helps Odysseus because he is her favorite mortal. She admires his cunning mind and his devotion to his family. Additionally, Athena supports Odysseus as part of her larger role as the protector of heroes and the upholder of justice.
Cities would adopt a patron god or goddess, eg Athena for Athens. They did, however give due honour to all the gods and goddesses.
