It depends on the type of volcano. In the case of a stratovolcano, also called a composite volcano (the kind with a tall, conical mountain) you would be struck by hot ash from a pyroclastic flow, and there is no way that you could out run that (although you should never give up)! In a shield volcano, like the ones in Hawaii, there is no pyroclastic flow and you could probably out run the lava.

Why is lava not the most dangerous part of a Volcanic eruption?

While lava can be destructive, often the most dangerous parts of a volcanic eruption are pyroclastic flows, ash clouds, and lahars (mudflows). These phenomena can travel much faster and cover larger areas than lava, posing a greater threat to life and property.

Is there a difference between lava and lava flow?

Yes, there is a difference between lava and lava flow. Lava is the molten rock beneath the Earth's surface, while lava flow refers to the movement of lava as it travels down a volcano or hillside. Lava flow is the result of the eruption of molten rock, which can vary in speed and direction.

What is the difference between lava flow lava fountains and lava tubes?

A lava flow is basically a stream of lava on the surface. A lava tube is an underground cave through which lava flows downhill. A lava fountain is lava shooting into the air out of a volcano in much the same manner as a water fountain.

How far on average does lava travel?

There's a range for lava flow that stretches from a few inches to a number of miles. It depends mostly on a lava's viscosity. Highly vuc\\iscous lava volcanoes, such as Mt. St. Helens, tend to erupt violently, but lava flows are slow and quick to solidify. Underwater eruptions may have lava that solidifies on the outside almost instantly. Extremely low viscosity lava flows, like those in Hawaii, may run for days and cover miles before solidifying.
