Croup (barking cough, usually in little kids) is a reaction of the airways- specifically the upper airways- to a virus. It is not a disease itself. The virus that causes croup is contageous, but a person not susceptible to the airway changes may not develop croup even if infected by the virus.
Croup is a most commonly caused by viruses but it could be due to other causes as well, such as bateria, allergens and inhaled irritants.
