It indicated they were Jews as opposed to the being one of "undesirable" people put into the camps. It was also a source of humiliation for them. The Nazis were big on that.
Some people would die by people who are Jews would be put in consentration camps and if were weak enough they would be put in gas chambers till the suffecated.
The first time Jews were put into concentration camps for being Jewish was after Kristalnacht, some were returned, some perished and others stayed in the system. In 1940 some were held in labour camps, but it was not really until 1941 that Jews were rounded up and put wholesale into concentration camps.
