There is really no good way to prevent this from happening other than making sure you have a proper supply of coolant/antifreeze in your system and a properly working thermostat. Overheating is a great way to warp the head and then blowing the gasket.
Anytime the engine overheats you have the possibility of blowing the head gasket.
Most head gaskets do in fact last the life of the car. The major cause of a head gasket failiure is lack of antifreeze in the system. antifreeze contains corrosion inhibitors which prevent the head gasket rotting and then blowing.
Buy gasket paper off eBay. This will stop blowing and make it run.
