There were some R134a units in 1992, but they were not the norm. Most likely, you have an R12 unit, which requires retrofitting in order to be compatible with R134a.

you can use a 1989 thru 1992 ac compressor in 1993 they went to 134a freon so they ar different.

You always want to put freon in an ac by using the small fitting low side on 134a systems. The large fitting is high side. Do not use it
