I imagine you could, though i don't know for sure. you would have to get a transmission, bellhousing, fly wheel, clutch, and shifter from a 96-98 mustang. The 99 and newer may have a different bolt patern on the flywheel, but im not sure. You would also need a pedal assembly from something. A supercoupe pedal may work, but I'm not sure if its compatible with the mustang clutch reservoir as the supercoupe uses a completely different transmission. you might have to use the mustang pedal assembly. You would have to modify your transmission crossmember, or graft in the mustangs. You may need to get your driveshaft shortened. Also you would need to take out the console and cut a hole in the driveshaft tunnel for the shifter. The console would need some modification for the new shifter. another thing to think about is hooking up the speedometer cable, and getting the right speedo gear to match the differential gear ratio. You probably have 3.08:1 rear gears, where a mustang might be 3.27:1 or something deeper. Also this may be a good time for a new exhast system, as the old one may interfere. I bet it would probably cost you 2000-2500 using junkyard parts to do it and would take 50-60 hours by someone who knows what they are doing. This may be best considered if your automatic just went out and you had to replace it. The cost of the automatic rebuild is cheaper, but not as fun - good luck.
An autimatic transmission will have a 4 speed transmission and a manual transmission will have a 5 speed transmission.
They all had 4 speed autos or 5 speed manual
For the older 1980-1982(9th gen) models, there were only manual transmissions For 1983-1986(10th gen) you could get either For 1987-1988(11th gen) both options were also available 1989-1997(12th gen): Only the Thunderbird SC came with a manual transmission: the Mazda based M5R2 5-speed manual. The Thunderbird base model and Thunderbird LX came with a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive: AOD 4-speed 1989-1993 and 4R70W 4-speed automatic from 1994-1997. (There is no 1998 Thunderbird) (Also there is no 5.0 after 1993 as ford went with the new 4.6L Modular engine used in the Mustang.) However, you can use a Mustang or Fairmont/Zephyr V8 as a donor for parts as everything is basically bolt in unless you have the inline 6 cylinder.
