I think it can happen when you are 21 and you get a lawyer and relinquish any rights of inheritance (and some change the name). But for me it was sad. It can also happen that you find yourself rejected by the step-parent(s) after reaching adulthood. Even the rest of "the family" will have become distanced. This happens more frequently than one thinks. It does in no way imply that the individual that was previously adopted or reared by a different family was in any way disobedient. It just happens. The media seems to only bring to light the adoption stories with the fairytale endings.
