i have one tank planted with both and one with fake plants and another with real and all the maintenance is the same. i do a water change once in a while, ok so for me it is as and when it requires it depending on the tank and what is breeding at the time, and always look of any of the plant require rinsing in clear water, if so i put them into hot water for a few minutes. if it is fake plants i tend to use boiling water whilst the real plants get put into water that is hand hot I have just planted some live plants in all of my tanks and changed the whole filtration sysyem to all undergravel filters. the maintemance is far less and the plants will help to absorb some of the nitrates the fish put into the water. please do look carefully in case any of the real plants that you put into a tank have any snails on them the difference is minimal
