It is not good to run any car without a thermostat. Initially the car will run too cold and use extra fuel as the choke will remain on, then it will overheat as the thermostat is needed to slow the flow of water through the radiator for it to cool effectively.
Remove the water supply hose from your 1987 Chevy Astro thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. Remove the old thermostat and drive in the new thermostat.
there is no drive shaft it's front wheel drive

Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. That is the thermostat housing. You may have to remove the upper drive belt cover to gain access.
Thermostat is located on side of cylinder block, behind coolant inlet housing for lower radiator hose and the generator. drain cooling system. rotate accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise to release tension from accessory drive belt. remove accessory drive belt. remove mounting bolts and generator. disconnect electrical connector from engine coolant temperature switch for removal of coolant inlet housing. remove nuts, coolant inlet housing, thermostat and gasket.
