Can you replace the word and?

Most of the time the ";" (semicolon) can be used in lieu of the word "and", here's an example:

Martha had been working in her garden all day; unannounced to her the dog had escaped from inside the house.

If we replaced the ";":

Martha had been working in her garden all day and unannounced to her the dog had escaped from inside the house.
