I replaced my HP 56 cartridge with an HP 21 and it works fine. However, I don't know if that would be the case for all printers. If you cartridge is in good shape, have it refilled at Walgreens. I have had a cartrige refilled three times and it still prints well.
in the case of HP 56 and HP 21 it is that one is color and the other is black ink. Also the number will let you know which printers they fit. Different ink cartridges for different printers, HP makes many printers, but you cant just buy any old HP black cartridge, you need a specific one. Consult your manual, or a specialist if you need a specific cartridge for a specific printer.
