I have frequently reused pickle brine in recipes asking for vinegar. It has more interesting flavor than regular vinegar.

I have no idea if it can be reused for pickling though.

How did pickles get the name pickles?

Bread and butter pickles got their name because bread and butter together are sweet. According to egullet.com, bread and butter pickles are named such because during the Depression, they were as regular a part of a diet as bread and butter. The difference between bread and butter pickles and sweet pickles is just a few ingredients. Sweet pickles use cinnamon, cloves, and allspice in a vinegar-sugar brine. There are 2 general types of pickles or gherkins: sweet or sour. The tastes are created by the solution they are pickled in. "Brined" pickles get their sour taste from fermentation, as opposed to the vinegar solutions used for other pickles. Other types of pickles are kosher-type (sour or half-sour), bread-and-butter pickles (a sweeter taste), lime pickles (which may also be salt pickled), and Swedish thin-sliced pickles.

How long must cucumbers soak in brine before they become pickles?

It really depends on the intesity of the flavor you want and the kind of pickle you're making - the standard benchmark is about 2 weeks. They only take about 2 days to absorb the briny flavor, though. 2-day old pickles are known as "new pickles", while the older ones are known as "old pickles".
