No. The computer controls all of the engne functions. I'm speaking about running the engine in a 2002 Escort. It is possible to run the motor without a brainbox. I think all of the parameters of operation would go to default mode. You'd probably get terrible gas mileage and the power curve would be off on it. As an example-- if the crankshaft position sensor wasn't telling the computer the position of the cranksaft it would have no way to tell what the timing should be.
