The temperature sending unit reads the temp of the coolant then sends a signal to the computer thought the relays on the diver side inner fender (in front of the strut tower). Then to the plug to the fan. The 4 cly and the 6 cly uses the same sensor. It a two wire sensor the sets right next to the thermostat housing.

Yes. The sensor on a 4 cly is on the back of the transmission on the passenger side near where the right drive shaft comes out. On a V6 it is on the other side.
They were small round cly type. Had metal ends with a glass tube in the center. Amp was written on the end. Can still be found at the auto parts stores.
