Yes. Any file format can be stored on a DVD disc.

However, you can't just save or write to a DVD. The supported method is to create a DVD image on your hard drive and burn the whole image to a blank DVD.Programs are available to do this. They can be purchased but free programs to do this are also available. Later versions of windows may also include the ability to burn to a DVD.

There are also rewriteable DVD drives with rewriteable DVD media. They also need to be burned the same way but it can be erased and burned again.

Some CD/DVD burning software also claims to be able to format the rewriteable media in such a way that additional document files can be written to it afterward.

Yes you can. You can use Windows backup program. Select the files/folders you want to backup and save it on your hard drive or on another removable media. Insert your blank DVD to your Bluray/DVD writer. You can either drag your backup file to your Bluray/DVD writer icon or use third party software to burn the backup file to blank DVDs.

Make sure the total size of the files you select for each time backup not exceed 4.2GB - 4.5GB. Otherwise the final backup file will not fit into 4.7GB single layer DVD. You'll have to use UDF file system on a third party software whenever you want to burn a file more than 2GB in size. I can recommend Nero Burning ROM to burn your backup files to DVDs.

Yes. A DVD is just a disc with the capacity to store data - it needn't be a movie.
