Yes. You can save movies, music, pictures, and documents although the files must be in a special form (example: all audio must be in mp3 file form to be able to put into the iPod.) For most mp3 players documents must be in pdf. form to be read inside the mp3
-- I don't own an iPod, but I'm sure you can store pretty much any kind of file on it - you may not be able to open them, but you can *store* them there. like, backup or maybe just dropping it off to a friend for them to put it onto their computer.

For Microsoft Word documents it is "My Documents".

Yes, you can, but only if you buy a document viewing app.
As frequently as Windows does on a PC.
Yes it is, you can open documents from previous version but be patient when you save documents, if you want compatibility with previous versions then save it from Save As -> Word 97-2003 Document.
everytime you sync your iPod with your PC all the apps get stored on a folder that you can easily access to transfer stuff to another iPod... C:/Documents and Settings/Username/My Documents/My Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/ Username being the name of the account your logged on to

Do you want to stop autosave? If so, go to tools>options>save tab (or in word 2007, word main menu>word options>save tab) and uncheck "save auto recover" box
Like you would do in saving photos. File >>Save>>go to My Documents and click save.
Sadly, no, since the iPod Nanos will not take powerpoints, word documents, and many other things, and iTunes won't help you do it either.
Can you save music and picture files on a CD? exactly. OBVIOUSLY you can save your documents on a CD!! Your welcome.
While being edited (before it's intentionally saved) Word documents are stored in the system's random access memory (RAM). Once the file is "saved" (*file, save as*), it is stored in the selected memory device. Saving a file to My Documents, for example, would save to the hard drive, solid state drive, jump drive, etc: the actual hardware where "My Documents" is located.
