Don't worry. It takes each day in the game and you can choose to save it. (You have to play with your cat for until you have to go to bed in the game.) I just figured it out myself!

Authentic cartridges store save data on their internal flash memory - while they do have batteries, this is to regulate the in-game clock, which the console itself does not do. Bootlegged cartridges almost always use a (cheap) battery-based memory system too. While it can save and load properly initially, they battery soon runs out, and the cartridge is unable to retain save game data.
