Polyurethane scratches easily which will definitely show through your slate tile, also due to the porous nature of all natural stones the poly will become a permanent fixture in your otherwise beautiful tile. So, in that case, it could be done using the latest specifications and design criterion for the sealing of a slate.

How does the cost of slate flooring compare to concrete?

A finished concrete floor is generally less expensive than a slate or stone floor. A simple professionally poured concrete floor can average about $5.00 a square meter. An installed slate floor costs considerably more that concrete depending on the tile you choose and installation costs. Slate flooring is more expensive than concrete. Stamped concrete is also an option that looks nice but it is still less than slate.

Could you put polyurethane on vinyl tile floor to seal it and make more waterproof?

Yes you can, however, ensure that this is the best option before executing. I do this to reinforce the self-stick vinyl tile and laminate flooring in my basement and it works great. I got tired of dropping a knife or something creating a huge gash requiring replacement. The polyurethane layer has protected my floors for years. Occasional reapplication of polyurethane in spots where needed making it look new brand new again versus cutting out and re-sticking a piece of the laminate floor that will never look as good as new...I use the former. There are a lot of nay-sayers out there about polyurethane on vinyl tiles and laminate floors, but I've always had great success.

Do you need to seal porcelain tile?

No, porcelain tile needs to be grouted which seals the floor. The tiles have their own water resistant finish on them when purchased.

Average Cost to seal a tile floor?

an average price to seal a floor properly is 1.00 per sq.ft. plus the cost of sealer used. This is a very poor answer, it depends greatly on what kind of tile, the use, how much & in what city.. Use average if you like, but on average your going to right as much as your wrong & that IS no way to run an airline! Grumble, grumble & dissent!

What can you do to put a shine on ceramic tile When the contractors put our tile down in our new building the tile is dull and has no shine to it?

First you need to identify what kind of tile you have. Ex. ceramic slate stone granite marble For each of the types there is a different way to get the shine your looking for. First clean the tile. Don't use acids or strippers because they can fade or change the color of the grout. Use vinegar and water. 1 part vinegar for 4 parts water. This alone may give the floor a nice shine. I use it when I do a final clean of floors I install. Next go to Lowe's Home Depot and get a tile seal. You will need to know what type of tile you have to determine what kind of seal you need. This seal will protect and give the floor a shine. It comes in many different varieties Main categories to look for are: original seal, semi-gloss seal, high-gloss seal. Now depending on the tile and the type of seal you got. You will need to seal the floor. Apply as many coats of seal as you want until you get the shine that you are looking for. Keep in mind to allow the floor to dry 2 hrs or whatever is recommend in between coats. To apply the seal is simple. Just spray it on and wipe it up with a sponge or cloth not colored be sure its white and sponge is some neutral color so it doesn't bleed onto tile. Be careful not to allow the seal to form puddles as they will leave white spots. Be sure to talk to someone in flooring dept before leaving to make sure you have everything you need.

Is tile or slate strong enought to hold a piano?

The tile is not the issue as much as the sturdiness of the sub floor and the installation of cement board over the sub floor that keeps the tile and grout from cracking. Tile on a cement slab should hold just fine, as long as there are no unsupported pockets between the two. Our upright piano is on a tiled floor with no issues.
