What do you mean it says your not on a Verizon network? it could just be the Verizon place having problems. unless u have a different text messaging thing.
It depends...if you have the 200 msging plan than NObut if you have the 500 or unlimited than yes*NOT ANYMORE...I HAD THE 500, WENT OVER, WHICH I NEVER DO, SO I UPGRADED TO 1000..SENT TWO MESSAGES TO A VERIZON FRIEND AND GOT CHARGED FOR IT. THEY NEVER TOLD ME!!! I HAD TO GET THE UNLIMITED!!

Yes, you are able to send free text messages to anyone else using AT&T. If they are not using AT&T, or you do not use AT&T, there will be a charge. If you carry a texting plan, it will be included in that.
Get into create new message and type them a txt but don't send it. Have them txt back on the same message but your never actually pressing the send button. Or go to notes or memo an do the samething.
