No, but you can avoid them. You can avoid battles by running away from the shadow or if you want to skip a battle you're in, choose the escape option.

NOTE: I encourage you to ONLY do this when your health is low, because if you skip all battles than you will get ready to fight the main battle and not be trained. Also, you cannot skip main battles.
