You can use regular latex house paint to protect the trunk and to detect any damage that might occur although there are other special paints that are also insecticides , that kill and repel ants and other destructive bugs.
Can you use floor paint on wooden porch ceiling?
You probably can. As long as the masonry paint is 100% acrylic, you will have no problem at all using it on a wooden porch ceiling. Using a cheaper vinyl paint is not suggested on wood though as it will craze and crack over time.
Can I use exterior latex primer OVER a bench painted with interior latex paint?
Yes. Still follow the rule of "Never apply a coat of paint onto anything powdery or starting to flake off." If that is the case you will need to prep the surface first. Probably by sanding it.

How to prepare a house for painting?
Exterior Painting- To paint the exterior of your home you need to properly power wash the house using TSP (a product from Sherwin-Williams). Verify that the paint dosent rub off on your hand when you wipe your hand across it. If it does, then your paint is "chalking". If you have already powerwashed and it is still coming off as a powder, then re power wash it. Next step is to scrape any loose material. Then prime any bare spots with exterior primer. Then, caulk any gaps, or seams. Depending on if you spray the house, or brush and roll it...you need to protect surfaces not to be painted. Spraying requires more areas to use plastic to protect the surfaces such as landscaping, windows, etc. Then paint all of the siding color, then the trim color.

What do you mean? Yes, paint on wood trim is typically latex these days. Some older homes may still have alkyd (oil), though. To find out for sure, put a little nail polish remover on a cotton swab and rub it on the paint in an inconspicuous location. It it gets soft and starts to come off, it's latex. Either way, sand it lightly and recoat with the same type of paint and you're good. If you're asking about bare wood, DON'T USE LATEX! The water will swell the grain of the wood. Use an oil primer that is made to take latex topcoats.
