No, dreams are a natural function of the subconscious mind. Like sleep, dreams are necessary for mental, emotional and physical health. When disturbing or upsetting dreams become a problem, the solution is often to improve the quality of your sleep, so that you awaken less often during the night.

It is possible to temporarily prevent someone from having dreams by sleep deprivation or waking them before they can dream, but that is not healthy. When researchers did this, they found that the participants had problems with their mood and mental focus. They also discovered that the subjects would immediately go into a dream state the next time they slept.
