You can substitute ricotta cheese for cottage cheese. I don't think it would work with cream cheese.
Ricotta cheese
No. Plain yogurt is a good substitute for sour cream. A substitute for ricotta cheese is cottage cheese that has been drained of excess water (use cheese cloth or seive).
You are most likely referring to the ricotta cheese. Many people substitute cottage cheese for ricotta cheese so that may be your answer as well.
full fat ricotta or cream cheese does the job.
Ricotta cheese is NOT a substitute for romano cheese. Use parmesan if you must. Ricotta cheese is more like cottage cheese. Romano cheese is a stronger, tastier than parmesan cheese also know as the pizza cheese.
Cottage Cheese
Can be and is also substituted in lasgne. I'm not a fan of ricotta myself though
The reason for adding the egg to the ricotta cheese mixture is to help bind the ingredients. If you have egg allergies substitute 1/3 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese for each egg.
No, ricotta is cheese, but yogurt is... yogurt.
I like to eat ricotta cheese
Sometimes, yes. But they do taste different and their texture is different so the resulting dish will be quite different. I'd experiment first and see if you like the result before you serve it to someone else.
